Autumn hadn’t expected it to land.

In general, she never expected anything she had to say to Cameron Kidd to affect him at all.

To land at all.

But those words just had.

And if she were honest, in her heart, she knew they weren’t strictly banter. She’d wanted to push him. She’d wanted to get a reaction from him.

And she had. She’d seen a flicker of something – there and gone in an instant – but definitely there… of something private.

Something painful.

It was in the clench of his jaw. In the way his eyes locked with hers the moment she said it – conveying a sense that he was surprised and… wounded.

And surely she should have felt a little spike of triumph? A little spike of satisfaction that she’d managed to say something to the guy that had actually registered on his consciousness?

But she didn’t.

She didn’t feel triumphant and she didn’t feel satisfied.

She felt bad and she felt regretful and she wished that she had held her tongue.

Most of all, she wished that Cameron would…

But no.

Even she, even green-as-a-cucumber unicorn-toting she knew better than to wish for that.

She liked to think she wasn’t a complete idiot.

Partial idiot? Okay, yes, she’d take that.

Complete idiot? No. No, she wasn’t one of those.

So she banished her wish before it even had a chance to form itself in her mind.

Or maybe her heart.

She wasn’t entirely sure.
